A blog by a Year 4 class at Heavers Farm Primary School

How did you work THAT out?

Opal and Moonstone learn numeracy together. When we use our mental strategies, we always share how we did it. Sometimes we notice that we all worked the same thing out in a different way!

You can do it…but can you explain how?

To get you thinking about your mental strategies… do you know your 8 times table? How could you work them out? What might help you remember them? Are there any patterns?

What are you reading?

At the end of the day, we listen to a story. Currently we are reading “The Lying Carpet” by David Lucas. The book is about a girl, who is also a statue and can’t move, however she can talk. She finds herself talking to a carpet! The book makesus ask lots of questions and gives us lots to think about. The carpet doesn’t always tell the truth…or does he?

What do you notice about the title?

What do you think about the book?

Story beads

Year four have been developing their interest in stories from around the world. This week we were looking at stories set in Ghana. We wrote our own stories using story beads. In most of our stories, something magic happens!

Each bead represents something different, which helps us remember the story. We have been trying to practice using an interesting selection of opening words for our sentences. Watch this space for some written examples of stories…coming soon!

Some of the stories we have been reading have songs in them, hence The boys outburst! We have discovered songs are important in the tradition of storytelling. Can you think why?

The Olympics!

New term, new topic!

This whole term we are studying the Olympics. We have discussed what we already know and a lot of interesting questions have arisen, including: Who started the Olympics? How old is the Olympics? Which countries have won the most gold medals?

Over the coming weeks we will be learning more about the history of the Olympics, so watch this space to see what we learn…

As every class in the school have been allocated a country to represent for these Olympics, we have been allocated Ghana. We are currently looking at stories set in Ghana and will be learning more about the Ashanti tribe. Vanessa has brought in some lovely Ghanian artefacts and symbols for us to look at. We have also been using symbols to tell stories. Watch this space for examples of our stories!

Measuring investigations

We love to investigate! Here are some photos from a measuring investigation. We were challenged to see if we could jump further than Mr Reid- who can allegedly jump an astounding 3 meters from standing still! We planned our investigation, recorded our results in a table and compared our results between the groups. We had to make some decisions about what equipment we would use and how to make it a fair test. We realised maths investigations are a bit like science experiments!

Can you jump further than Mr Reid?

Rainforest art

We simply must show you the art we created at the end of last term!
We looked at aboriginal art from Australia which represents animals and plants using lots of colours and dots. The paintings were bold with outlines around simple, sometimes repeated, shapes and patterns. We looked at our own photos of animals and plans from the living rainforest for inspiration. Here is what we created! Enjoy.

The Living Rainforest

On Monday all of year four went to the Living Rainforest as part of our ongoing topic Rainforests.

We had a tour where we learnt about what kinds of food and medicine the rainforest provides. We recognised the Cocao plant from studying about chocolate last term.

We came across lots of animals hidden among the trees: lizards, sloths, toucans, huge tortoises, turtles, very big tropical fish and even a 1.5m long crocodile called Courtney!

Here are some photos of use learning about the plants and animals of the Rainforest!
